At least 104 tigers in Kaziranga, population at saturation point

Wildlife Experts have sounded a note of caution that increase in tiger population in Kaziranga National Park may endanger the animals’ lives as well intensify man-tiger conflict as the population of the big cats reaches saturation point in the world famous national park.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority has recorded the presence of at least 104 tigers through camera-trapping Census between January 4 and March 9, this year. Though the Census has registered only one more tiger compared to the 2014 Census, wildlife experts have pointed out that the existing tiger carrying capacity of Kaziranga National Park is between 100 to 105 and the population must not increase beyond this point so as to ensure healthy survival of the animals.

Out of 104 tigers tracked this year, 95 tigers and seven cubs were found in Kaziranga National Park and two were found in Laokhowa Burachapori. The Census exercise covered a total 484 square kms. of the park. There were 31 males, 55 females and 11 undetermined.

Wildlife activists are of view that the NTCA should now focus on other tiger reserves where there is scope of increasing the population, like Namdapha.

Wildlife experts of Aranayak, an NGO, said, “A high population density means higher incidents of conflict with humans. Such density often produces a floating population of animals or ‘transients’ that are pushed out of their territory. It might result in infighting among big cats and death of animals.”

The Kaziranga National Park, where intensive exercise on tiger conservation started in 2007, is spread over Golaghat, Nagaon and Sonitpur districts.

According to a 2014 report, Kaziranga has the highest tiger density (per 100 square km) — 12.72.

Moreover two other national parks of the state has recorded a significant growth in tiger population.

The recent Census of Manas National Park and Orang National Park has also registered a growth in the number of tigers, with the presence of 30 tigers in Manas and 28 tigers in Orang.

Tigers Are Now Back At Assam's Manas Tiger Reserve

The Manas National Park has recorded the presence of at least 30 tigers in just-concluded tiger census. The number is more than double the figure of the 2016 census.

The growth in tiger population in one out of four tiger reserves has come as a major encouragement for the forest department as conservationists pointed out the preliminary figure for Kaziranga National Park is not out yet but they expect it to cross the 140-mark. The authorities are yet to announce the census report of Nameri National Park, another tiger reserve in Assam.

Pointing out that this also marks the biggest ever tiger population in Manas after one-and-a-half decades of social unrest, beginning in 1989 that had pushed the tiger reserve to the brink, the conservationists believe that this is a huge moral booster to conservation initiatives in Manas National Park. The park has been on a recovery path after regaining the World Heritage Site status.

The last census had recorded the presence of only 14 tigers in Manas.

Field director of Manas Tiger Reserve, Hiranya Sharma, said, “The latest tiger census done through camera-trapping has recorded 30 tigers, 24 of those being adult tigers. The adult male-female break-up is 12-11, while the sex of one could not be determined.”

Mr Sharma also clarified that last year’s census had left the Panbari Range due to logistics constraints. “This time we covered the entire Manas landscape (in India). The increase in the tiger number is significant and a shot in the arm for Manas’ long-term conservation prospects,” he said. In 2016, the census, which was part of a trans-boundary (Manas National Park and Royal Manas National Park of Bhutan) survey, had recorded 25 tigers, of which 11 were from Royal Manas National Park and 14 from Manas National Park. Manas National Park provides shelter to at least 22 endangered species.

Genetic study reveals eight tigers in Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh

The first genetic monitoring of tigers in Pakke reserve has recorded the presence of Eight Big Cats.

Guwahati-based wildlife NGO Aaranyak carried out the genetic monitoring activity at its wildlife genetics laboratory on the request of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

“Successful completion of genetic monitoring of tigers in Pakke this year enabled us to obtain information on the presence of eight tigers in the reserve — three female and five male tigers,” the report said.

The last camera-trapping carried out as part of the phase-IV monitoring of tiger and prey population under Project Tiger in collaboration with the NTCA, Arunachal Pradesh forest department and WWF India from December 2012 to January 2013, had recorded six tigers.

Sources said the work provides first-hand genetic information on the tiger population, which can be used for long-term monitoring and also contribute to studies on demographic and genetic exchange of tigers in the landscape.

The Pakke reserve is bounded by a contiguous forest of Nameri tiger reserve in the south, the Kameng river in the north and west and the Pakke river in the east.

During the field survey in January and February this year, 175 carnivore scats were collected. Of this, 45 scats of tiger origin were identified.

However, only 20 genuine tiger scats were taken for analysis, as the rest 25 scats showed ambiguous results possibly because of sample cross-contamination.

“There is scope of finding more tigers if the entire reserve is surveyed,” Tana Tapi, divisional forest officer of the Pakke tiger reserve, told The Telegraph.

The NTCA has made genetic monitoring mandatory in low-density tiger reserves, since camera trapping often tends to miss individuals in a low-density area.

Development activities, poaching and indiscriminate felling of trees leading to habitat loss are some of the prominent threats to Pakke, sources said.

The reserve has a great diversity of mammalian species with at least 40 species recorded. It is also rich in avifauna with 294 species.

Pakke was declared a tiger reserve in 2002 by the NTCA and is the 26th tiger reserve in the country. The NTCA has said since Pakke is adjacent to Nameri, joint monitoring work is essential for the tiger landscape.

Aaranyak has done genetic monitoring in five tiger reserves — Manas, Dampa, Namdapha, Buxa and Palamau. In Manas, 23 tigers were found, 15 and 19 tigers were found on two different occasions in Buxa, six in Palamau, two and one on different occasions in Namdapha and three and two on different occasions in Dampa.

The results of phase-IV monitoring of tiger and prey population of tiger reserves in the country, which will also include Pakke, will be revealed in February. The camera-trapping method was used for the study.

Orphan Siberian Tiger Now A Mother

Found as a cub, starving and frostbitten in Russia’s Far East by a pair of local hunters, the Siberian tiger Zolushka—Russian for Cinderella—is a conservation success story. As covered by Matt Shaer in a February 2015 cover story for Smithsonian, she was brought to Dale Miquelle, the director of the Russia Program for the Wildlife Conservation Society, an American nonprofit.

He, in turn, brought Zolushka to a newly opened rehabilitation and reintroduction center, where scientists were developing a new approach to caring for captured tigers, so that they might release them to reclaim their ever-dwindling territory. Zolushka became the first tiger to arrive at the center—“the test case,” Shaer wrote.

And now, she’s the first rehabilitated tiger in history to mate and give birth in the wild. Camera traps in the region have spied two young cubs at Zolushka’s side.

Within a year after arriving in Miquelle’s care, Zolushka was hunting prey--inserted surreptitiously into her pen--with the skill of wild tigers her age, and conservationists decided that she was ready for reintroduction into the wild. They outfitted her with a GPS collar (which soon malfunctioned) and planned to keep tabs on her via camera traps they’d installed throughout her range. It was a risky move, but, Shaer wrote, “the upsides were enormous: If left-for-dead orphaned cubs could be rehabilitated to the point of mating with wild tigers, they would not only provide a boost in the local population but, in the aggregate, perhaps reclaim regions that hadn’t seen healthy tiger communities in decades.”

The winter after her release, having adapted well to life in the wild, footage confirmed that Zolushka was sharing a range, and even food, with a healthy male tiger the scientists named Zavetny. Tracks left in the snow indicated that the two might be mating, raising the possibility of what would eventually happen.

“Miquelle is hopeful that one day very soon,” Shaer wrote in February, “he’ll receive a photo from a camera trap showing Zolushka with a line of cubs trailing behind.”

Last week, a little over two years after her release, Miquelle received what he was looking for. Zolushka’s maternity has made history, and has made the team that worked to rehabilitate her feel “like godparents,” says Miquelle, when I spoke to him this week about the milestone.

If all goes well, he explains, Zolushka will care for her young until they’re about a year-and-a-half, at which point they’ll leave their mother to stake out their own ranges.

While Zavetny may drop in the family from time to time (as male tigers are known to do), it’s the females that do the heavy lifting when it comes to raising their cubs, hunting to feed them for a year or more. Miquelle is particularly curious to see how Zolushka will handle the responsibility given that she didn’t have the chance to spend her full “childhood” with her own mother. And he warns that there are always dangers. “If the cubs don’t survive,” he cautioned, “it doesn’t mean she’s a bad mother. Lots of things could happen.”

But he was quick to strike a celebratory note. In a video, the cubs can be seen huddling near Zolushka and playfully tussling with her. They also scratch and sniff a “scent-marking tree” where Zolushka and Zavetny may have marked territory before. “It’s interesting that the cubs were also interested in the scent marking tree,” said Miquelle. Other than that behavior, there isn’t much in the video that’s surprising or unusual—which is a welcome sign.

“They’re showing typical young cub behavior,” Miquelle said. “The good news is that Zolushka’s acted well enough as a mother to get her cubs to this stage, a couple months old. That’s a very good sign.”

Siberian Tigers In the Wild -- Is It Successfully Possible ??

An Orphaned Female Siberian Tiger Cub is slowly being reintroduced to life in the Wild in Russia's Far East.

From its origins in Russia’s remote Primorsky Province, the Krounovka River wends northeast, passing through ridges red with willow trees and barren stretches of grassland, before finally joining a larger river known as the Razdolnaya. By modern standards, the river valley is all but unpopulated, save the odd logging outpost, but in the winter months the region fills with amateur sportsmen who come to stalk the abundant sika deer and the freshwater trout.

On a frigid afternoon in February 2012, a pair of hunters working the Krounovka were halted by an unusual sight: a 4-month-old Amur tiger cub, lying on her side in a drift of snow. A typical Amur, hearing the sound of human footsteps, will either roar in an attempt to scare off the interlopers or melt away entirely. This cat was different. Her eyes were glazed and distant, her breathing shallow. The hunters tossed a blanket over her head and carted her into a nearby town, to the home of Andrey Oryol, a local wildlife inspector.

Oryol immediately recognized the severity of the situation. The cat, who was eventually given the name Zolushka—Cinderella, in English—had clearly not eaten in days, and the tip of her tail was black with frostbite. Oryol made an enclosure for her in his wood-lined banya, or steam bath, and fed her a steady diet of meat, eggs and warm milk. After a few days, her vitals had stabilized; after two weeks, she was back up on all four paws, pacing restlessly. Heartened, Oryol reached out to Dale Miquelle, an American scientist based in Primorsky, and asked him to come at once.

“My first thought was that the mother had probably been poached, and that the poachers couldn’t find or had no use for the cubs,” Miquelle recalled recently. “Mothers are a lot more vulnerable to poaching than other tigers, because they’ll try to stand their ground—a mother doesn’t want to abandon her cubs, and she might not have time to get them together to escape. So she ends up getting shot.”

Among tiger specialists, a close-knit group, Miquelle, the director of the Russia Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society, an American nonprofit, is a gruff, laconic presence—an action man and not a classroom man, who, by his own admission, is much better suited to fieldwork than to interpersonal politics. There are only a few scientists alive with his skill for tracking and catching live tigers, and when a big cat is found anywhere in Russia’s Far East, Miquelle and his team are usually the first summoned to lend a hand.

Miquelle arrived at Oryol’s house shortly after lunch, along with Sasha Rybin, a WCS colleague. Oryol showed them into the banya. Immediately, Zolushka began to snarl. Adolescent tigers, despite their relatively small stature—Zolushka was about the size of a golden retriever—are dangerous animals, with sharp claws and teeth and a frightening growl that’s almost like an adult’s. “It can really knock you back,” Miquelle told me. He used a stick to distract her while Rybin jabbed her with a dart containing Zoletil, a tranquilizer. Once she had collapsed, they lifted her out of her enclosure and placed her on a nearby table, where a pair of local veterinarians performed surgery to amputate the necrotic tip of her tail. Bandaged and sedated, Zolushka was moved to the Center for the Rehabilitation and Reintroduction of Tigers and other Rare Animals, 50 miles to the south in Alekseevka.

Opened months earlier by a coalition that included the Russian Geographical Society and the government-funded group Inspection Tiger, the Alekseevka Center spilled over eight acres thick with brush and vegetation. There was sheeting on all the fences, so that captive tigers wouldn’t be able to see outside, and a series of chutes so that prey could be introduced surreptitiously, a system designed in consultation with Patrick Thomas, an expert from the Bronx Zoo. Meanwhile, a battery of cameras allowed scientists to observe the animals from a control center without disturbing them. “There were two main goals,” Miquelle recalled. “Don’t let the animal get acclimated to humans. And teach her to hunt.”

The practice of rehabilitating wild predators to prepare them for release back into the wild is not unheard of. It has been accomplished successfully, for example, with bears, the lynx in North America and, once, in India with Bengal tigers. But it is new enough to remain controversial, and for WCS and the other organizations involved with the Alekseevka Center, the release of Amur tigers represented a tremendous risk. A few years earlier, a wild cat that had been captured and collared by WCS staff killed a fisherman outside the coastal community of Terney, in Primorsky; Miquelle, who lives in the village, told me that the incident turned the town against him and his employees. If one of the rehabilitated cubs became a so-called “conflict tiger,” Miquelle told me, “it could easily set back tiger conservation in the region a hundred years.”

But the upsides of reintroduction were enormous: If left-for-dead orphaned cubs could be rehabilitated to the point of mating with wild tigers, they would not only provide a boost in the local population but, in the aggregate, perhaps reclaim regions that hadn’t seen healthy tiger communities in decades. Beyond that, the hope was to establish a model that scientists in other countries could perhaps one day duplicate.

Zolushka was the first tiger to arrive at Alekseevka—the test case. In the early months, she was fed primarily meat, dumped into the enclosure through one of the slots in the fencing. In the summer of 2012, a pair of young scientists from Moscow, Petr Sonin and Katerina Blidchenko, traveled to Vladivostok to help inaugurate the next phase in Zolushka’s rehabilitation. Sonin and Blidchenko presented Zolushka initially with rabbits—fast, but ultimately defenseless. The next step was wild boar, a thickset animal with formidable tusks and the low-slung center of gravity of a tank. The boar seemed at first to confuse Zolushka. She could catch up to it easily enough, but the kill itself was harder to accomplish. A rabbit was downed with a single snap of the jaws; a boar fought back. “It was like a kid trying to figure out a puzzle,” says Miquelle, who was a periodic visitor to the center in those weeks. “She got it, but it took a little time.”

Three boars in, and Zolushka was driving the animals to the ground with grace and skill. She did the same with much larger sika deer, which were pushed through a chute and into the enclosure. She was healthy, she was growing fast, and she could kill as ably as many wild tigers.

In May 2013, a little more than a year after she arrived at the Alekseevka Center, the decision was made: It was time for Zolushka to be set free.

The Amur tiger—also known as the Siberian—is, along with the Bengal, the biggest in the tiger family. Amurs are ocher and russet, with a pink nose, amber eyes and thick black stripes that band their bodies in patterns as unique as any fingerprint. An adult male Amur can measure as long as 11 feet and weigh 450 pounds; the average female is closer to 260. On the kill, an Amur will load its powerful back haunches and slam forward like the hammer of a revolver. To watch a tiger bring down a deer is to see its weight and bulk vanish.

The Amur probably traces its lineage to an ur-species of Panthera tigris, which enters the fossil record about two million years ago. Over the ensuing millennia, nine distinct subspecies of tigers emerged, including the Bengal and the Amur. Each was an apex predator—the pinnacle of its region’s food chain. Unlike the bear, a formidable predator who feasts on both flora and fauna, the tiger is purely carnivorous, with a preference for ungulates such as deer and wild pigs; it will starve before consuming a plant.

In the not-so-distant past, tigers roamed the shorelines of Bali, the jungles of Indonesia and the lowlands of China. But deforestation, poaching and the ever-widening footprint of man have all taken their toll, and today it is estimated that 93 percent of the ranges once occupied by tigers have been eradicated. There are few wild tigers remaining in China and none in Bali, nor in Korea, where medieval portraits showed a sinuous creature with a noble bearing and a nakedly hungry, open-mouthed leer—an indication of the mixture of dread and admiration humans have long felt for the beast. At the turn of the 20th century, it was estimated that there were 100,000 tigers roaming the wild. Now, according to the World Wildlife Fund, the number is probably much closer to 3,200.

In a way, the area comprised of Primorsky and neighboring Khabarovsk Province can be said to be the tiger’s last fully wild range. As opposed to India, where tiger preserves are hemmed in on all sides by the thrum of civilization, the Far East is empty and conspicuously frontier-like—a bastion of hunters, loggers, fishermen and miners. Just two million people live in Primorsky Province, on a landmass of nearly 64,000 square miles (about the size of Wisconsin), and much of the population is centered in and around Vladivostok—literally “the ruler of the east”—a grim port city that serves as the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the home base of WCS Russia.

This past autumn, I flew to Vladivostok to meet with Dale Miquelle, who had agreed to show me around his ward, which extends from the southern lip of Primorsky to the easternmost reaches of Siberia, where the mixed coniferous and deciduous forest, the natural habitat of the Amur, comes to an end. (“I go as far as tigers go,” Miquelle is fond of saying.)

At 7 on a dark morning in late October, a forest green Toyota HiLux squealed to a stop in front of my hotel, and Miquelle piled out. As animals go, Miquelle is more bear than tiger—broad-shouldered, shambling, with meaty paws and unruly black-and-white hair. Now 60, Miquelle was raised outside of Boston and studied at Yale (he was originally an English major), before moving on to the University of Minnesota for his master’s degree and the University of Idaho, where he received his doctorate in biology in 1985. His specialty was moose. In 1992, shortly after the Soviet Union was dissolved, Miquelle was part of a small delegation of Americans dispatched to the Far East to work with Russian scientists to study the habitats of the dwindling Amur population. The other Americans went home several months later; Miquelle has never left.

Miquelle describes his work at WCS Russia as both research and conservation—“with the research making the conservation possible,” he says. He oversees what is generally agreed to be the longest-running field research project on the Amur in history. Using GPS collars and other tracking techniques, he has established an unrivaled library of data on his subject, from the size of the territory a male Amur might mark for his own (averaging nearly 500 square miles) to its preferred prey (red deer and wild boar top the list). That information has allowed Miquelle to advise the government on what areas need to be better protected, and to help establish new reserves in Russia and China. “The effectiveness of conservation grows proportionally in relation to how much you know about the animal,” Miquelle told me. “You can’t go at it blind, you know?”

That morning he had an itinerary ready for me: a ten-hour drive north to an old mining village called Roshchino, where we would catch a ferry across the Iman River and drive another hour to Udege Legend National Park. There we would trek up into the hills to set up camera traps, invaluable tools for monitoring wild animals: Placed correctly, the combined infrared and photographic lenses stir to life at the first sign of motion or heat and provide imagery and data that might otherwise take months of backbreaking work to obtain. A few cats had been seen in Udege Legend, Miquelle told me, and he wanted to get a grip on their numbers.

At the outskirts of Vladivostok, crumbling old housing complexes gave way to tall copses of Korean pine, and soon we were barreling across the surface of a great, gray plain. To pass the time, Miquelle talked to me about history. In the 1940s, he explained, it was believed that there were as few as 20 Amur tigers left in the Far East. But communism, which had been ruinous for many Russian people, was actually good for Russia’s big cats. During the Soviet era, the borders were tightened, and it became difficult for poachers to get the animals into China, the primary market for tiger pelts and parts. After the Soviet Union collapsed, the borders opened again, and perhaps more calamitously, inflation set in. “You had families whose entire savings was now worth zilch,” said Miquelle, whose wife, Marina, is a native of Primorsky. “People had to rely on their resources, and here, tigers were one of the resources. There was a massive spike in tiger poaching.”

By the mid-1990s, it seemed possible that the Amur tiger would soon be extinct. Back then, Miquelle worked for the Hornocker Wildlife Institute, an organization founded by the scientist Maurice Hornocker that later merged with the WCS. Although Russian field men had already done good work counting and studying the remaining population of Amur tigers, they were limited to working in the winter, when tiger prints were visible in the snow. The Hornocker Wildlife Institute brought radio collars, transmitters and the telemetry experience necessary to track big cats remotely.

It was a depressing time: Almost every tiger the group collared seemed to be poached. Sometimes the poachers would cut the collar off the animal with a hunting knife; sometimes they’d blast it with a rifle, to halt the transmission of the radio signal. A 1996 census of the Far East’s Amur population, using traditional snow-tracking methods and the expertise of area hunters and rangers, concluded that there were somewhere between 330 and 371 tigers in the region, and maybe 100 cubs. In 2005, Miquelle and his team led a second census, which put the count at between 331 and 393 adults and 97 to 109 cubs. Miquelle believes the numbers may have dipped slightly in the few years afterwards, but he is confident that heightened conservation efforts, a more energetic defense of protected lands and improved law enforcement have now stabilized the population. A census planned for this winter should help clarify the numbers.

But stabilization is different from growth, which is what makes the Zolushka experiment so intriguing. For conservationists in Russia, it is not just the cauterizing of a wound but a way forward—the nursing back to healthy life of a sick body.

Tiger Density In Nagarahole National Park

That the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve is home to a good number of big cats was always known. But did you know that the forest area has a density of 8.6 tigers per 100 sqkm? Providing such insights is a scientific journal brought out by the Karnataka forest department. This means about nine tigers roam in every 100 sqkm of Nagarahole (the national standard for a good density of the big cat is between 8 and 10 per 100 sqkm).

Launched in 2015 , the journal, Tiger Monitoring at Rajiv Gandhi National Park-2015, is the result of a comprehensive camera-trap exercise carried out between January and March 2015. As many as 400 camera traps were installed in 167 locations covering the entire park to note minute details about the movement of tigers. The speciality of this first-of-its-kind exercise in the country is that 72 tigers have been identified and given unique IDs.

Going by the results of this exercise, the park has 93 tigers. The national tiger census, however, puts the number at 101. Forest officials say it's common to find such differences between tiger estimates.

The Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, officially known as the Rajiv Gandhi National Park, covers an area of 643sqkm and is spread over Kodagu and Mysuru districts. It is home to one of the country's largest number of tigers.

The exercise was carried out by the Karnataka forest department in association with the CSS Corp CSR Foundation, and as many as 637 tiger photographic 'captures' were obtained over the 60-day period.

Principal chief conservator of forests (head of forest force), Vinay Luthra, said such corporate support is crucial to carry on conservation measures effectively, which again is possible only if there's proper data on what needs to be conserved. "The camera-trap exercise at Nagarahole is only the beginning.

Soon, we will be preparing similar reports on other reserves as well. Next on the cards is Anshi-Dandeli Tiger Reserve, which was recently renamed the Kali Tiger Reserve," he added.

Referring to the camera-trap exercise, Luthra said, "While monitoring the number of tigers is one aspect, such exercises also help us learn more about the habits and habitats of the endangered feline.

We get to know about the movement of tigers between different habitats, the corridors they use and reasons for human-animal conflict," said Luthra.

The Adaptability of Tigers In Stressful Times

A year-long monitoring of two radio-collared sub-adults Bittu and Srinivas, has for the first time shed light on how cubs take baby steps to survive in stressful territories.

A year-long monitoring of two radio-collared sub-adult cubs T9 and T10, popularly known as Bittu and Srinivas, has for the first time shed light on how cubs take baby steps to survive in stressful territories dominated by humans and adult tigers to gain enough weight — physical and in terms of might — to throw around in the future.

This is the longest period for which sub-adult male tigers have been monitored through a GPS PLUS radio collar anywhere in the country. Fitted first on March 17 2016 on both the siblings, the collars were replaced with new ones in January (T10) and February (T9), which will hopefully extend the monitoring till the time the two grow into mighty adults able to challenge superior males.

And the results so far have thrown up an interesting journey through thick forests and patchy corridors, streams and rivers, highways and railway tracks and farmlands and human settlements, on different trajectories.

A study by Wildlife Institute of India team led by scientist Bilal Habib, his colleague Parag Nikam, researchers Pallavi Ghaskadvi and Zahidul Hussain and former Pench Tiger Reserve Field Director Srinivas Reddy has shown how the two brothers have survived through these areas living like nomads, often staying at a particular place for just 4-5 days and at least once crossing each other’s paths —which led to T9 (Bittu) getting pushed out.

“We have known dispersing tigers pass through fragmented corridors and survive in non-protected forests and human-dominated landscapes, but this is the first time we have actually been able to track their journey for such a long period. The two tigers siblings were just 21 months old when first radio-collared after they showed the signs of wandering out of the eastern part of UKWS. Today, they are about 32 months old and on the cusp of full adulthood. It will be a short while before they join the league of full-grown dominant tigers living like kings in their chosen areas,” Habib told The Indian Express.

 Today, both already weigh a huge 230 kg, only a tad below their father’s 240 kg. Interestingly, they have also been photographed with females.Starting from UKWS, the two have walked different paths to currently settle in non-protected Bramhapuri territorial forest of Chandrapur district, with T10 also switching between Bramhapuri and Paoni in Bhandara district.

Incidentally, the whole non-protected landscape between UKWS fringes to Bramhapuri, about 100 km apart, has around 27 tigers, perhaps the highest number for such an area anywhere.

The two had first started moving away from their mother (T3, Fairy) together. Initially, they would separate but meet in a few hours’ time.

The separation grew to days and then Srinivas moved to the adjoining Paoni range and returned to the sanctuary after four days.

He then started moving towards the southern part along the mighty Vainganga river, successfully hunting prey.

Bittu, meanwhile, remained confined to his home range. He then followed in his brother’s footsteps to Paoni. During this period, which were monsoon months, Srinivas travelled right up to Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) and returned to Paoni range, covering 320 km in two months.

“Tigers often choose the monsoon to walk around as there is a lot of undergrowth offering cover. And more interestingly, this was the period when a hectic search was on to locate Jai. Yet, nobody noticed the radio-collared Srinivas, showing the tiger’s ability to escape human eye,” Habib said.

This journey was quite like that of his father Jai, who was known to walk from UKWS to Bramhapuri and back, covering a huge area of over 600 sq km, often pairing with as many as four tigresses in these areas.

Srinivas’ tracking revealed interesting facts, like his not staying in a particular area for more than four days, swimming twice across the Vainganga, walking through farms at night and resting in forests in the daytime and generally hunting wild prey.

Bittu had, meanwhile, settled in Paoni but was edged out by Srinivas after he returned there. It was here that Bittu had to start his southward journey. He, however, showed a different character. He rested at night and peak day hours and was active only at dusk and dawn. He travelled along all possible patches — roads, railway tracks, lakes and even village roads. And unlike Srinivas, he was spotted by many villagers.

Ten months after the radio-collaring, Habib’s team was preparing to put the new collar around the cubs’ necks, since the batteries of the first were running out of steam.

“It, however, turned out to be a very difficult task with T9 remaining elusive in Ghodazari forest in Chandrapur district for days. T10 was freshly collared in the Bramhapuri forest,” Habib said.

Habib added: “The study has shown that tigers too could be as adoptable as leopards to the most trying conditions when it comes to their survival. It also prompts us to think in terms of having a conservation strategy for tigers outside PAs. If integrated with the interest of the locals, it could fetch handsome monetary dividends to the latter through conservancy tourism.”

Note : Srimivas was found dead on a Farm near Nagpur electrocuted by Live Wires in 2017.

Only Bittu is the lone survivor at present.

Second Largest Breeding Population of Indo Chinese Tigers Discovered In Thailand's Forests

The world’s second known breeding population of Indochinese tigers (Panthera tigris corbetti) confirmed in Eastern Thailand’s Dong-Phayayen Khao Yai Forest Complex – a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Remarkable discovery now makes Thailand home to two breeding populations of this tiger subspecies, a significant step toward ensuring their long-term survival in the wild.

Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) and conservation groups Freeland and Panthera have conducted a scientific survey on the tiger population using the ‘photographic capture-recapture’ method, indicating a density of 0.63 tigers per 100 square kilometers.

While conservationists welcome these exciting new findings, they warn of the continued decline of tigers elsewhere in Thailand and across their global range.

Conservationists in Thailand and the country’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) have released scientific findings today that confirm the existence of the world’s second breeding population of Indochinese tigers, and provided the first photographic evidence of tiger cubs in Thailand’s Eastern Forest Complex.

A camera trap survey conducted using the “photographic capture-recapture” method in the country’s eastern Dong Phayayen – Khao Yai Forest Complex (DPKY-FC) during 2016 has revealed a density of 0.63 tigers per 100 square kilometers (~1.63 tigers per 100 square miles ), confirmed a joint statement released today by the DNP, counter-trafficking organization Freeland and global wild cat conservation organization Panthera.

While the scientific data suggests an exceptionally low tiger density — on par with some of the most threatened tiger habitats in the world — the findings, “demonstrate the species’ remarkable resilience given wildlife poaching and illegal rosewood logging present in the Complex,” the statement said.

“The extraordinary rebound of eastern Thailand’s tigers is nothing short of miraculous,” said John Goodrich, one of the world’s leading tiger experts and Senior Tiger Program Director at Panthera.

The new photographic evidence from the DPKY-FC of successful breeding of tigers is the first to surface in over fifteen years, and is a rare conservation win on the way to ensuring the magnificent cat’s long-term survival in the wild. Previously, Thailand was thought to house only one remaining viable breeding population of wild Indochinese tigers, in Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary to the west of the country, which was reported to have 35 – 58 individuals as of February 2016. The discovery of this “new” population is the result of months monitoring with specifically-designed camera traps, and weeks of hard trekking through the forest by rangers and conservationists throughout 2016.

“The stepping up of anti-poaching patrols and law enforcement efforts in this area have played a pivotal role in conserving the tiger population by ensuring a safe environment for them to breed,” the Director of the National Parks Division of the DNP Songtam Suksawang said in the statement. “However, we must remain vigilant and continue these efforts, because well-armed poachers still pose a major threat.”

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005, the DPKY-FC is one of mainland Southeast Asia’s last contiguous tracts of forest providing adequate habitat for tigers. Thailand’s wild tiger populations have been driven to the brink of extinction chiefly due to habitat loss, rampant poaching, and overhunting of their prey animals. Fewer than 200 wild tigers are thought to remain in Thailand.

The remarkable evidence of breeding in the DPKY-FC bucks the trend of their continued decline elsewhere in the country, except in Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary, where the present breeding population is largely due to a ramping up of protection efforts —including an intensive patrolling system — begun in 2005 by the Thai government. In other areas of suitable tiger habitat across Thailand, they have been gradually extirpated.

Worldwide, currently only an estimated 3,000-4,000 tigers remain in the wild, and according to IUCN they now inhabit less than 6 percent of their historical range, which once spanned from Turkey across Asia to Russia’s eastern coast. Listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, breeding populations of wild tigers were thought to exist in thirteen different countries as recently as 2006, but their continued sharp decline now sees them only in eight (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand and Russia). In 2011, the IUCN described the extent of the recent decline of the Indochinese subspecies as “serious” and “approaching the threshold of Critically Endangered.” If wild tigers are permitted to go extinct, “it would be the largest carnivore to do so since the American lion (Panthera leo atrox) died out at the end of the Pleistocene, approximately 10,000 years ago.” John Vaillant wrote in “The Tiger.”

2016 proved a significant year for tigers when conservation group WWF and the Global Tiger Forum announced in April that the world’s tiger population had finally shown an increase after “several decades of constant decline.” The WWF study estimated that in April 2016 there were an estimated 3,890 wild tigers worldwide, up from 3,200 in 2010, when the 13 tiger range countries announced an ambitious commitment to double tiger numbers by 2022.  Several prominent tiger experts and scientists have however disputed the findings, claiming WWF’s report and its implications were “scientifically unconvincing.”

In the same month, the WWF declared tigers in Cambodia “functionally extinct” stating, “there are no longer any breeding populations of tigers left in Cambodia,” largely due to intensive poaching and continued deforestation of Cambodia’s tropical dry forest ecosystems. A reintroduction action plan that will be implemented by the Cambodian government and WWF was also launched  last year.

In Thailand, conservationists are concerned that as illegal Siamese rosewood logging rages on across the entire DPKY-FC, the illegal loggers increasingly pose a deadly threat to the freshly discovered wild tiger population. It is crucial to bolster protection for Thailand’s wild tigers, Kraisak Choonhavan, Freeland’s chairman of the board said in the statement released today, adding, “As long as the illegal trade in tigers continues, they will need protection. Counter-wildlife trafficking starts at the source.”

Thailand has ramped up protection for Siamese rosewood, in June 2015 the DNP formed an elite group of forest rangers called “Hasadin” specifically tasked with curbing the species’ rampant poaching and subsequent degradation of Thailand’s eastern forests. Across the DPKF-FC, officials are deploying new motion-sensor cameras that can send images in almost real-time to an email account, allowing them to keep track of multiple areas at once without having to deploy rangers to those locations.

Keeping connectivity for tigers across Southeast Asia:

Continued illegal logging, ongoing road expansion and encroachment within the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex saw the World Heritage Committee warn of a potential downgrading of the complex to the “World Heritage in Danger List” in 2015. The Committee is expected to make a decision at its 41st session in July this year. The expansion of Highway 304 – a road that cuts through the DPKY-FC, running between Khao Yai and Thap Lan National Parks, is one of those threats that could lead to a reduction in tiger numbers and occupancy, destroying part of the treasured tiger landscape and affecting their ability to move around within remaining complex area.

Asia’s infrastructure development boom could lead to the creation of 11,000 new kilometers of roads and railways, causing “the unmitigated fragmentation and destruction” of tigers’ habitats and pushing them further to the brink of extinction in the wild, according to a report released by WWF last year. Maintaining strong connectivity between existing or potential habitats for the Indochinese tiger, and many other species that require large areas, such as the Asian elephant, is vital for those species’ long-term survival in an increasingly human-altered landscape.

The planned construction of a major highway linking the Dawei Special Economic Zone in southeast Myanmar to southwest Thailand will bisect remaining forest habitat, home to Indochinese tigers. The highway will cut through a critical corridor running north-south that links up two of the most significant forest conservation landscapes containing key protected areas in tropical Southeast Asia, Thailand’s Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM) and the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex.

A report released in April 2016 by WWF outlines the key wildlife crossing sites to be preserved or planned along the Dawei highway, using species modeling based on existing camera trap data and expert knowledge of species movement behavior. Kaeng Krachan National Park (within the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex) —at the southern end of the critical forest corridor — is the largest national park in Thailand at 2,914 square kilometers (1,125 square miles), and is a large swathe of forest habitat with the potential to provide a reintroduction site for tigers.

On today’s confirmation of the world’s second breeding population of Indochinese tigers, Goodrich said: “Thailand’s World Heritage Forest Complex is home to prime forested habitat that, with significant conservation resources, could support eight times as many tigers as it does now. With continued infiltration of rigorous anti-poaching protection, there is no doubt that this population can be fully recovered, burgeoning into a tiger stronghold and serving as a source of life and diversity for depleted tiger populations in Cambodia, Lao PDR and throughout the species’ range.”

Palm Oil Plantations in Indonesia are threatening the existence of the Sumatran Tiger

As Sumatran rain forests fall to palm oil plantations, their critically endangered tiger may soon vanish from the planet.

There are now only two regions on the Indonesian island with enough breeding females to sustain the species, according to a new study.

“The erosion of large wilderness areas pushes Sumatran tigers one step closer to extinction,” says study leader Matthew Luskin, research fellow with the Smithsonian Institution who's based at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

The Sumatran is the smallest of the nine original subspecies—males rarely grow to eight feet long.

Despite successful anti-poaching efforts, the Sumatran tiger population has declined about 17 percent since 2000, to just 600 animals left in the wild. Tigers on the neighboring islands of Java, Bali, and Singapore went extinct in the 20th century. (Read how some tiger populations are rising.)

That's largely because, between 2000 and 2012, some 17 percent of prime tiger habitat was torn down, mainly for oil palm plantations, which covers nearly 30 million acres of the country.

“Sumatra has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world,” adds Luskin, who received funding for his research from the National Geographic Society.

DISAPPEARING FORESTS:

Using images and videos from hundreds of infrared camera traps set up in two national parks, Luskin and his team identified individual tigers by their unique stripe patterns. This provided an estimate of how many tigers live in a given area.

This new information was combined with data from 17 previous estimates of tiger population density.


WHAT'S DRIVING TIGERS TOWARD EXTINCTION?

The results revealed that tiger numbers are twice as high in primary versus degraded, or logged, forests—highlighting the extreme importance of primary forest to the survival of the species.

Luskin and colleagues' global conservation strategy for tigers depends on maintaining a network of “secure source populations” with at least 25 breeding females in suitable habitat large enough to have more than 50 breeding females.

Sixty years ago Sumatra likely had a dozen of these secure source populations across the island. Today there are just two: Sumatra’s Kerinci Seblat National Park and Gunung Leuser National Park, in the northern part of the island.

“We set up a bunch of cameras inside Kerinci Seblat National Park, but when we returned to retrieve them 10 weeks later, I was shocked to see about 50 hectares of the forest had been clearcut,” says Luskin, whose study was published December 5 in the journal Nature Communications.

AN OCEAN OF PALM OIL:

Illegal logging in Kerinci Seblat is a major threat to other species, as well. “It’s an incredibly beautiful jungle with endangered Sumatran elephants, clouded leopards, and many others species. It should be a conservation priority."

Many local and international groups are working to preserve the forests; the Indonesian government is also on board, but needs do a lot more, he adds. In 2014, under pressure from conservation groups, the big oil palm companies adopted a no-deforestation policy.

Found in a huge array of products, from shampoo to cosmetics to chocolate bars, palm oil is one of the world's most commonly used vegetable oils. (Read about the human cost of Indonesia's palm oil plantations.)

“Flying over Sumatra is like flying over an ocean of oil palm plantations,” adds co-author Mathias Tobler, a scientist with San Diego Zoo Global. “There’s no question that it’s the main driver of deforestation."

“Safeguarding the remaining expanses of primary forests is now absolutely critical to ensuring tigers can persist indefinitely on Sumatra," Tobler says.

At the end of the day, Luskin says he’s optimistic about the future of the Sumatran tiger.

“People love tigers. They really want to protect them and it’s easier to do now that there’s less forest to protect.”

Tigers Disappearing Here, There, and Everywhere

It is terribly distressing to know about the disappearance of Nawab -- A Sub Adult Male Tiger From Nagpur's Forest Division.

Please Read Page 5 of the Times of India Wednesday March 14, 2018 about the Plight of Nawab.

This seems to follow the same pattern as in the case of Jai and Srinivas -- Two Male Tigers that  were electrocuted and poached.

It seems to me that Poachers are targeting Maharashtra's Famous Male Tigers who live in the verdant forests of Vidarbha.

Maharashtra has a high density of Tigers but the rampant poaching of its male tigers will cease to make it a State Rich in Tiger Density.

From Tadoba to Pench to Tipeshwar Tigers till now were abundant.

Recent Poaching cases bring this issue into question.

Why are Forest Officials not being held accountable for the untimely death of these Tigers ??

Tigers are Flagship Species of Maharashtra's Forests. It is they who control the population of Herbivorous Ungulates.

To me it seems that there is terrible indifference on the part of Government Officials at the State Level and at the Centre. Tigers are the National Animals of India but no one seems to care.

If Male Tigers are poached like Nobody's Business how can the Tiger Population Increase at all ??

India needs to take a leaf out of Botswana's Book vis a vis Wildlife Conservation.

Botswana is a country situated in Southern Africa where Eco Tourism is the Mantra.

There is a Para Military Group called the Botswana Defence Force that actively protects its Elephants and Rhinos.

Why are Forest Officials not being provided with Automatic Rifles to take on Poachers ??

When will this apathy vis a vis Tigers End ??

The Watery World of Tigers

FYI -- Sundarbans Tiger Reserve is situated in the Eastern Indian State of West Bengal.

In the Sundarbans, Tigers are everywhere.

Camouflaged in the Mangrove Forest and living in a unique water dominated habitat  with a minimal prey base, the Sundarbans Royal Bengal Tiger is a Mysterious Animal.

The Question that has been nagging Forest Officials and Conservationists for some time, is How Can Tigers be counted in the Sundarbans ??

Till recently, It was an impossible exercise to get an estimate of the Tiger Population using existing methods.

Enter The Method of Camera Traps.

In 2014, Camera Traps began to give positive results.

The Photographs, revealed 87 Unique Individual Adult Tigers in this Mangrove Forest Ecosystem.

The Results of the Camera Trap Exercise pointed to the existence of 24 Tigers in South 24 Parganas Forest Division which is outside the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve.

In this region, which is extremely close to Human Beings -- 10 New Adult Tigers were photographed.

Images of 16 Adult Tigers were captured in the National Park East Range, 19 in West Range, and 15 each in Basirhat Range and Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary.

In each of the Tiger Zones, there was a minimal increase of 5 Adult Tigers.

The Sundarbans Tiger's Main Prey are Wild Pigs. A Number of Tiger Scats were examined and found to contain Pig Hair. It is obvious that the Tigers relish Pig Meat to a large extent.

The Tigers also eat Rhesus Macaque Monkeys, Crabs, Fish, and a limited number of Swamp Deer that are found in the water logged Mangrove Forests.

This Region is the only forest in India where No Cattle or other easy prey is available for these Tigers making them swim across Water Channels for a meal.

To get an estimate of the Tiger's Prey even the Fish in the Region would have to be accounted for.

If Tigers here regularly Prey on Fish, then it would place these Tigers on top of the Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Chain.

Tigers On The Comeback Trail

Tigers will roar again at Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal. Located in Alipurduar district, the reserve, parts of which border Bhutan, has been identified for the tiger augmentation programme by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

How big is it?

Notified as a tiger reserve in 1983, Buxa consists of moist, deciduous and evergreen forests. It stretches to a length of 50 km from west to east and 35 km from north to south.
Over the past few years, the number of tigers in the Buxa reserve has been hotly debated by wildlife enthusiasts. While Forest Department officials claimed there were tigers in the reserve, almost no sighting of the big cats raised questions about their presence. The survey of tigers in 2011 based on DNA analyses of scat put the number of tigers at 20.

Where will tigers come from?
 

The Sunderbans in south Bengal is home to about 100 tigers. Experts have consciously decided not to augment tigers in the Buxa reserve from the Sunderbans, a completely different mangrove ecosystem.
Instead, tigers from the forest reserves of Assam, which have a similar flora and fauna, will be introduced in Buxa. The reserve is located very close to Assam’s Manas Tiger Reserve, and some experts believe that animals from Manas often come to Buxa using Bhutan as a corridor.

What are the challenges?

The initial plan is to introduce six tigers at Buxa, but this poses a challenge to forest officials as there is human habitation in the area.
The tiger reserve has an area of about 757.9 sq km, of which 390 sq km lies in the core area and 367 sq km in the buffer zone. There are about 38 villages in Buxa and 49 villages in the fringe area.
A number of tea gardens are located on the periphery of the reserve.
The people residing in the villages mainly work at the tea plantations. In an attempt to mitigate the human versus animal conflict, the Forest Department has started awareness programmes in the villages before introducing the tigers.
Besides the population pressure, another major challenge at Buxa is the broad gauge rail line passing through the reserve, connecting Siliguri and Alipurduar. Over the past few years, a number of elephants and other animals have died, having been run over by trains.
The Buxa reserve is home to smaller cats such as leopards which occasionally surface in the tea gardens nearby.
There are also common clouded leopards, jungle cats and fishing cats. The herbivore list includes elephants, Indian gaur, chital, sambars, barking deer and hog deer.

Tipeshwar -- A Fabulous Tiger Haven

FYI -- Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Vidarbha Region of Maharashtra State in Western India. It has a good Tiger Density.

Tiny Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated near National Highway -- 44 in Yavatmal District of Maharashtra State.

It boasts of excellent Management Practices and a Good Quality Prey Base which helps the existence of 12-14 Tigers including 10 Cubs within its 143 Square Kilometre Area.

Tipeshwar is fast emerging as a Prime Tiger Conservation and Tiger Tourism Haven despite being small. The High Incidence of Tiger Sightings in the Sanctuary has made it popular among Wildlife Enthusiasts specially from Hyderabad as well as from the State of Telangana.

The Area needs to be expanded to hold the increasing number of Tigers and because of the increase in the population of Wildlife Tourists from Tadoba Tiger Reserve situated in Chandrapur District.

The sightings of these Big Cats will increase with the onset of Summer.

Tipeshwar has attracted local youth in large numbers who have converted their status from uninformed to noteworthy wildlife photographers all thanks to Tiger Sightings.

Tiger Cubs can often be seen at Tipeshwar in a playful mood.

In Tipeshwar, Tigers are sighted by following the calls of other animals in the wild.

Tiger Population on the verge of the century mark

The tiger population in the two States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will soon hit the century mark, thanks to a successfully laid recovery track that channels through Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve. If Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments manage to prevent poaching in the coming years, the tiger population will grow from an all time low of 68 in 2014 to a little over a hundred by 2018.

The minimal, but encouraging growth in tiger population will come about as wildlife conservation authorities have managed to nurture eight female tigers who gave birth to an average of three cubs during the last two years. As some cubs would attain adulthood by reaching the age of two this year, conservationists say another batch will turn two by 2018.

The cubs were spotted in the camera-tracking equipment of wildlife crime control bureau that was introduced only a few years ago.

As per the latest tiger census, report of which was released in January 2014, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are the only States in South India with a depleting tiger count that dipped from 95 in 2006 to 68 in 2014.

In other South Indian States like Karnataka, the tiger population increased from 103 in 2006 to 190 in 2014.

In Tamil Nadu the population had seen a steep growth from 76 to 229 during the same period. In Maharashtra, the population increase was from 103 to 190 from 2006 to 2014 and in Kerala the increase was from 290 to 406 during the same period. The tiger population has been depleting in Telangana due to large-scale poaching of individuals for tooth, skin and nails. Hyderabad is an active market for the sale of nails, officials pointed out.

Indigenous population chips in

Conservationists have been supporting tigers with the aid of indigenous population who find their abode in Nallamala forests. “Using the cameras we could spot 20 to 22 individuals in Mahabubnagar and Adilabad part of the reserve and some of them have cubs,” said chief wildlife warden, Telangana. In Andhra Pradesh too, cubs and individuals were spotted, officials said.

According to conservationists, tigers are found more in moist deciduous forests of Andhra Pradesh than the dry deciduous forests in Telangana. “In Kawal, Telangana, we spot mostly a floating population of tigers. The moist deciduous forests in Guntur, Kurnool and Prakasam have a good population of tigers,” said Rahul Pandey, an IFS officer who worked on conservation.

The World Of The Tiger

When we think of tigers in India, two questions come to mind. How does India ––a densely populated nation with a depleted forest cover support half the world’s tigers today? And what does the future hold for the species?

The persistence of tigers in India’s human dominated landscapes is linked to the establishment of Project Tiger over four decades ago and the subsequent creation of over 50 tiger reserves.

However, it would be naïve to assume that protected areas alone have saved tigers, or that they will, in themselves, ensure the species’ survival.

The large cats’ abrupt disappearance from prominent reserves like Sariska in Rajasthan and Panna in Madhya Pradesh, and the documentation of fewer than five tigers in Achanakmar in Chhattisgarh and Buxa in Bengal are well known.

There are many factors that determine whether Protected Areas (PAs) have positive conservation outcomes- habitat connectivity, park management regimens and human acceptance of living alongside tigers, risks and costs notwithstanding.

The willingness of communities to accommodate tigers is shaped by the degree to which communities are included in environmental governance and natural resource management. Tiger Reserves in India largely censure access and rights of local communities, resulting in the real or perceived alienation of communities from forests. Resulting attrition between communities and forest administrators can ultimately undermine tiger conservation.

However, several Tiger Reserves like Periyar and Parambikulam in Kerala have made tangible headway towards inclusive conservation.

Tiger populations have also persisted in India because the species is generally resilient and adaptable and can breed quickly given adequate prey and secure habitats.

As conservation biologists, we are becoming aware of the presence of breeding populations in areas beyond extant boundaries of PAs, including areas with extensive timber harvest practices or high human use, like Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, Sathyamangalam in Tamil Nadu and 24 Parganas in Bengal.

Thus, to hedge on the species’ bet against extinction, it is important to disburse conservation resources over large landscapes that could comprise a mosaic of protected areas, reserve forests, agricultural tracts and settlements. Such a strategy is well aligned and allows for dispersal and immigration of wide-ranging mammals.

However, the ability of tigers to persist in human dominated landscapes has sharp limits. If humans and cattle overrun tiger habitats, the species’ populations may be restricted to small and isolated patches or in larger tracts that lack effective protection.

Importantly, the tiger’s persistence in modern India’s human dominated landscapes has been made possible by the acceptance of many millions of people living adjacent to tiger habitats. Tolerance for tigers is woven into India’s cultural fabric, as has been exemplified in the Terai and in Central India, where large tiger populations exist near habitations, where the felines prey on livestock, and occasionally claim human lives.

While it is clear that the species has ultimately survived in regions where people have willed it to live and co-existed with tigers, it would be imprudent to over-simplify human tolerance, or that such attitudes are ubiquitous. Regular news stories about big cats being poisoned, bludgeoned, snared and electrocuted in various parts of the country serve as reminders of these limits of tolerance.

What is then the future of tigers in India?

Poaching remains the greatest and most immediate threat to wild tigers today. In India, reported tiger deaths related to poaching reached an all time high in 2016. Worryingly, these reported figures only represent a fraction of actual mortality.

The systemic overhaul of protection measures in India has been slow and many areas still remain understaffed. Growing human populations, expanding settlements, and the proliferation infrastructure networks resulting in smaller habitats further challenge their future. Projections of sea-level rise indicate that the future of tigers in the Sunderbans also remain uncertain .

Though the challenges are many and complex, we remain optimistic. Tigers will likely persist in large, connected landscapes where the big cats can move freely and safely between habitat patches, such as those in the Terai and Western Ghats.

However, with rapidly expanding linear infrastructure these and other landscapes continue to be carved up into ever-smaller fragments. If critical corridors are lost, the future occurrence within habitat fragments may increasingly require the species’ active translocation from one area to another.

This will require further advancing of our capacity to undertake complex tiger translocations and developing systems to monitor tigers and ensure their protection. Some important steps have been taken towards these ends.

A large number of frontline-forest department staff are being trained in technology-aided law enforcement and monitoring, and are better equipped to curb poaching than they were a decade ago. This month, India became the third country to have a tiger habitat site (Landsdowne Forest Division in Uttarakhand) accredited under the Global Conservation Assured Tiger Standards scheme.

While we persevere in our efforts to ensure the survival of this majestic species, it is hard to envision what their world and ours will look like. Will cultural ethos, that today engender coexistence, remain intact and large numbers of humans stoically continue to live in the shadow of fierce carnivores? Or will we fence off our reserves, and harden boundaries between human spaces and wilderness?

Is it conceivable that we will be able to engineer landscapes, through prescient land use planning, that maintain permeability and facilitate tiger dispersal while also developing mechanisms to rapidly contain individuals that stray into settlements?

Time alone will bear witness to these questions.

Bor Tiger Reserve's Katrina delivers Third Litter in 2.5 years

Bor Tiger Reserve has delivered its third litter in just 2.5 years, with a gap of just 14 months between each litter.

Tourists were thrilled to sight three 3-month-old cubs of Katrina at a waterhole. Katrina is the dominant female of the little known and smallest tiger reserve Bor (138.12 sq km), 60km from Nagpur in Wardha district.

Staff and officials monitoring the tigress since 2013 said Katrina delivered the first litter of four cubs (2 males and 2 females) in October 2014. The second litter of three (2 females and 1 male) cubs was born on January 2016, and now the third litter in March 2017.

One of the cubs from the second litter was killed by a wild dog last year. Male tiger Yuvraj and female Pinky are still being sighted by tourists at Bor's Adegaon gate. All other cubs did well and dispersed in buffer zone and other forest areas through the fragmented corridors.

"Every time, the cubs were first sighted with Katrina about two months after birth, and hence in the records the date of their sighting has been mentioned as date of birth," said Bor officials.

As per tiger science, a female can rear some 6-8 litters over her 10-12 year lifespan. However, six-year-old Katrina has delivered 10 cubs in a span of 2.5 years if one considers the first litter from October 2014 to March 2017. It means the cubs were separated in 14 months.

With six more years to go in Katrina's lifespan in the wild, at this rate the tigress at an average of 3-4 cubs can deliver 20 more cubs, breaking the record of MP Pench's Collarwali, which has so far given 26 cubs from seven litters.

Presently, Bor has 12 tigers, which includes 7 cubs, 3 females and 2 males. One of the males was the dominant Bajirao (B2). Bajirao, who mated with Katrina, had a huge territory, right from Hingni, Kharangana and Karanja in Wardha to Kalmeshwar in Nagpur.

Well-known Bengaluru-based conservation zoologist K Ullas Karanth says, "If a litter is lost, the tigress can typically mate again within a month, and have the next litter in 3.5 months. Not knowing the full history of this case, I cannot say more."

Another tiger expert and former director of Project Tiger PK Sen says, "It's very surprising. I have not heard of such happenings in my life or ever read in any book or document."

"Only once in my lifetime have I come across a tigress with one about three-month-old cub and two about 20-month-old cubs moving together in Tadoba in 1998. The elder two separated from the mother after a few weeks," Sen said.

However, Wildlife Institute of India (WII) tiger scientist Bilal Habib says though it is an unusual situation, it happens in high density areas. "Females tend to mate with males early as a strategy to save their cubs. It has happened in Tadoba, another high density area," said Habib.

Habib added Bor reserve has a good prey base, abundant water and protection, hence it has become a good breeding ground. "The area is too small to accommodate a large number of tigers, hence surplus population will have to always move out," he said.

Even in low density Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary (UKWS) in Nagpur district, the park's dominant tigress Chandi delivered 17 cubs from 2009, but all were reared till they were 2 years old, the time when males disperse in search of new territories.

North East India Tigers Are Unique And Special

The Tiger Population of the Northeast is genetically different from the rest of the country, an official tiger report has revealed for the first time.

The revelation was made in the detailed report of Status of the Tigers, Co-predators and Prey in India brought out by Wildlife Institute of India and National Tiger Conservation Authority that for the first time has dealt with genetic structure of tigers in the country to ensure effective conservation efforts.
There are mainly two large population clusters of tigers in the country - the northeastern population and population of the rest of the country.

"The Tiger population in the Northeast represents a unique cluster when compared to those from the rest of the country.

An interesting step would be to investigate the admixture of genetic material between these and the Indo-Chinese tigers ( Panthera tigris corbetti) found in the border areas of the northeastern states," the report said.

Senior professor at the Wildlife Institute of India and one of the authors of the report, Yadvendradev Jhala, said: "Tigers from the Northeast India are distinctly different in their genetic composition. This is likely as the Northeast tiger population probably forms a zone where there has been historic gene flow from Myanmar."

"This is the route tigers took to enter India and this process has been continuous, resulting in mixing of genes of tigers from Southeast Asia and India. It creates a different and distinct composition of gene frequencies in the region," he added.

Wildlife biologist with NGO Aaranyak, Firoz Ahmed, said: "The tigers of the Northeast have more chances to share its genes with the Southeast Asian tigers of Myanmar, Thailand and South China because of its habitat connectivity in the trans-boundary areas. Therefore, the Indo-Chinese sub-species and the tiger population of the Northeast India are likely to be very similar. Further genetic study may reveal this."

"The tiger population of the Northeast is significant for conservation as they may work as a stepping stone to exchange genes between the Royal Bengal tiger and Indo-Chinese tiger. This will help gene pool preservation within the tiger species," he added.

The report said the Northeast, Dibang and Namdapha formed one population cluster, while Manas, Kaziranga, Nameri and Buxa formed a second cluster.

Quantifying gene flow in tiger populations was also crucial to the understanding of how ancestry, dispersal and isolation operate in maintaining meta populations, the report said.

A meta population consists of a group of separated populations of the same species which interact at some level. The authorities also carried out non-invasive genetic sampling where tiger populations could not be assessed by camera trap because of logistic constraints like extremely low density.

Under non-invasive genetic sampling , 12 tigers were found in Namdapha, Dibang and Dampa reserves in the Northeast, respectively.

Overall, in the Northeastern Hills and Brahmaputra landscape, Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong-Pakke-Nameri-Orang is the largest source  with (163 tigers) and should be managed as a single meta population.

Enhanced protection in the region will help build prey and subsequently tiger population in the long-term, the report suggested.

Manas-Buxa, along with areas of Bhutan landscape, had potential to sustain higher number of tigers and were currently below their carrying capacity.

Dibang and Namdapha show good promise for tiger and biodiversity conservation but needed more conservation investment, the report added.

Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary Is Now A Tiger Reserve


The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has sanctioned ‘Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary’ spread over 351.25 sq kms as a ‘Tiger Reserve’ in Chhattisgarh.

Five years ago, a proposal was sent to NTCA in this regard as there were  tigers on the move from Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh to Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary, officials  said.

Now after getting the status of a Tiger Reserve, there will be DFO level Forest Officer there. Besides, there will be well trained staff including a veterinary doctor.

A Tigress was spotted moving with three cubs and a tiger five years ago in Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary.

So, The  Forest department sent a proposal to NTCA to declare it as a Tiger Reserve.

Chief minister Raman Singh had provided in-principle approval in a meeting of State Wildlife Board for formation of the Tiger Reserve recently.

As per officials, it may take six months for formation of the Tiger Reserve. Barasingha (swamp deer) will be translocated here from Kanha National Park, MP, as there is conducive atmosphere for such animals.

There is abundance of water in Bhoramdeo in addition to other natural surroundings. This wildlife sanctuary is the origin of Fen and Sankari rivers and these rivers join and make up a Big River in Kanha National Park. Bhoramdeo has 160 sq km as core area and 152 sq km as buffer zone.

Kabirdham DFO Prabhat Mishra said, “ We are in regular touch with NTCA officials after sending the proposal for the Tiger Reserve. Though It is a Wildlife  Sanctuary , we are doing our level best for wildlife conservation but now as it has been made a Tiger Reserve, it will be an added advantage for us and we will work more.”

Two tigers , a tigress and cubs had been spotted in Bhoramdeo Forest Reserve during the last few months since March this year.

The Forest Department has installed camera traps for the monitoring of wild animal movements which proved presence of two cubs along with two tigers and a tigress in the reserve.

Bhoramdeo Forest Reserve situated in between Kanha National Tiger Reserve and Achanakmar Tiger Reserve, has provided evidence of presence of wildlife  ever since it was formed three years ago. 

The camera traps installed across the forest region of Bhoramdeo Forest Reserve has provided evidence of presence of tiger, tigress and cubs for the last few years.

All India Tiger Census Set To Begin In January 2018

India will begin its four-yearly tiger census in January 2018 amid expectations that new data, set to be released in January 2019, would show a rise in big cat population.

Training of staff is underway for the census, which counts tiger numbers inside and outside reserves.

The last all-India census occurred in 2014, when tiger numbers stood at 2,226 , up from 1,706 in 2010.

With state surveys reporting notable increases, some estimate that the tiger population will cross 3,000 during the 2018 count.

Top officials at the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) confirmed that the tiger census will happen in 2018 and the final numbers will be ready by January 2019.

“We expect tiger numbers to show an increase,” NTCA chief Debabrata Swain, said.

States with high big cat populations are jostling for the title of the ‘tiger state.’ Top officials from Uttarakhand that had the second largest population in 2014 (340) , said their numbers had grown to at least 361. Officials from Madhya Pradesh. with the third largest population (308) in 2014, said it now has 350 tigers.

The Tiger Roar Is Fading in Odisha

This is a Terrible Situation all around with the Wild Tigers being the Victims and Sufferers because of official neglect and apathy. 

Orissa, thanks to its sizeable area of forest cover, has all along been regarded as a major tiger habitat in the country—Similipal in the north, Sunabeda in the south and Satakosia in Angul district. But the ground reality in these places has worsened over the years, resulting in a sharp decline in wildlife population, including tigers. 

The nearly 6,569 sq km Simlipal Biosphere in Mayurbhanj district has since been run over by Lawless Forces.
    

The situation is no better at the 600 sq km Sunabeda sanctuary, which, too, poses a serious danger for tourists. Satakosia, which is not far off from Bhubaneswar, has all but become a haven for poachers and timber smugglers.
    

Amid all this, the helpless tigers are witnessing a steady decline in their numbers. Five years ago, tiger population in Simlipal, going by the state census, was 101. But in 2006-07, when the WII conducted a camera-trap census, the number was found to be abysmally low around 20. The number was not to the liking of the state government, which  conducted its own survey again and could not take the number beyond 60. All this notwithstanding, the government’s ongoing “Project Tiger” and over Rs 12 crore spent on the conservation program at Simlipal.
    

The Sunabeda sanctuary, where Lawless Forces Writ runs after they repeatedly attacked forest offices there, is claimed to have 34 tigers. Satakosia has now hardly 10 tigers, which, environment activists say, is not a “viable population” to let the animals survive for long. More so, a 2000 MW thermal power plant has been proposed on the borders of the sanctuary.     

Orissa had counted 226 Royal Bengal Tigers in 1993, which subsequently fell to 192 (M-57, F-75, cubs-60) by 2004. If one goes by the WII’s cameratrap census, from out of the 1,411 tigers counted across the country in 2008, Orissa accounted for not more than 54, including 20 in Simlipal actually. 

 There is rampant destruction of animal habitat all over the state. Large-scale mining has worsened the situation.

Missing Male Tiger of Tadoba Reserve Located

Four years after wildlife observers said they lost track of a male tiger in the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) at Chandrapur near Nagpur, an image of Ookhan was captured via a camera trap far away from his home early this month.

Eight-year-old Ookhan was spotted 80-100 km away near Pathri, a village close to Ghodazhari area, where safaris recently began. The area and falls under the Brahmapur division adjoining TATR.

The stripe pattern of Ookhan from a 2012 photograph matched with tiger’s image recorded by the camera trap on March 2 this year. Stripe patterns are unique to every tiger.

 “It is a known fact that male cubs generally travel farther away from their mother’s territory to establish their own. This prevents inbreeding among tigers,” said Jignesh Patel, a naturalist, and who has been visiting TATR for six years.

 Born in 2009 to Yeda Anna (also known as Crooked Tail) and mother Tara (or Nakkatti) in the Moharli range, Ookhan separated from his mother in 2011. Moving 15-20 km away, the two-year-old was regularly seen at Vasant Bhandara — his father’s territory. Vasant Bhandara was dominated by two older male tigers Katezhari (better known as Tyson) and Gabbar, making it difficult for Ookhan to establish his territory.

Collarwali Tigress a Super Mom

You May Call Her A "Super Mom".

Collarwali is an amazing fertile tigress at Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh State who has given birth to 4 more cubs now.

This is Her Seventh Litter and she has so far mothered 26 Tiger Cubs -- An Amazing Record for any Tigress in Madhya Pradesh State.

The Latest Litter is a massive increase in the State that has lost 35 Tigers recently.

Referred to as Queen of Pench and Pench Princess -- Collarwali is one of 4 Cubs of Famous Tigress Barimada who was photographed and featured in a BBC Wildlife Documentary -- Spy In the Jungle.

She was the First Tiger Cub to establish her Home Range so close to her Mother's Home Range.

Collarwali has had her Ups and Downs with Litters with her first litter not surviving the harsh climatic conditions in Pench.

However, as an Experienced Tiger Mother Her Subsequent Litters have survived and have added to the Adult Tiger Population of Pench Tiger Reserve.

Most Of her Litters have been in caves in and around Pench.
